About me - My name is Matthew Lake was born in 1984 and am a student living in Cardiff, UK. I just finished a two year course in Computer Networking and will be applying for Medical School entry for 2007. If unsuccessful gaining entry into med school then my other option will be Biomedical Science degree.

I am 5ft 7", weigh 108 lbs and have a small body frame. This is quite a low weight and was one of the effects from doing CR.

I enjoy playing guitar, recording music, reading, online gaming, science, playing pool and football... and so many other things!

Starting Calorie Restriction - I first heard about Calorie Restriction in various news reports featuring members from the Calorie Restriction Society, but never took much notice at first. Although I did start incorporating more healthy foods into my diet, I still had yet to make that huge change. This was until I found a blog on calorie restriction. Aprils blog showed that CR isn't all that hard and so I started practising Calorie Restriction around March 2005.

I am one of the younger members of the Calorie Restriction Society as most are middle aged. Some people find it strange that I am trying to hold back death at my age, people say to me that I have plenty of time left and just to forget about it. As I write this I am 21 years old and the days are going faster than ever before, it's not hard to imagine how quick the next decade will go by. The effects of aging do not really become apparent until after the age of thirty, but why wait until then to do something about it? The earlier I started CR the better. I want to keep my youthful appearance and health as long as possible.

Why I do Calorie Restriction - My first priority is to avoid premature death from common diseases that now plague our society. These include Diabetes, Heart Disease, Strokes and other chronic diseases. All my Great Grandparents lived to around 85 and all died of Lung cancer which was related to smoking. Most of my relatives on my Fathers side enjoy relatively good health, but my grandmother did die of colon cancer around the age of 50 as far as I am aware. My grandfather recently died of lung cancer but again it was smoking related, he made it to 85 also!

Now the problem is mostly with my mothers side of the family. Many of them suffer autoimmune diseases like lupus, diabetes, heart disease among other things. My grandfather died at the age of 50 with a heart attack. My mother has now had 3 small heart attacks at the age of 40 and only now has given up smoking. She also has lupus and many other disorders. I am not expecting her to be part of my future.

So as you can see, my first priority is too prevent premature death from any of the diseases that run through my family. I believe that I will be successful in doing this now that I practise Calorie Restriction.
